Tropical weather information for the Atlantic
Ocean...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico
November 30th marked the end of the 2005 hurricane season....This season will  
go down in history setting many records including...

* The strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin at 882 mb (26.05 inches)!!

* The first hurricane season on record to exceed 21 named storms breaking the old record in
set in 1993. Total was
27 . 15 tropical storms became hurricanes which broke the record of 12
in 1969.  
7 of the hurricanes became major hurricanes (Category 3 and higher).

* The first season since 1851 to produce
four Category 5 hurricanes (Emily, Katrina, Rita,
Wilma)
.

* The first season to have
4 major hurricanes making landfall. (Dennis,Katrina,Rita,Wilma)

* A record 7 named storms had formed by the end of July.

* 5 of those storms formed during July
(another record).

* The first season since hurricane names began to use all the storm names and begin using
the Greek alphabet for storm names.
(Alpha,Beta,Gamma,Delta,Epsilon ,Zeta were used).

* The most costliest hurricane in recorded history at an estimated $80 billion dollars  
(Hurricane Katrina).

* The most deadliest hurricane since the Palm Beach-Lake Okeechobee hurricane of 1928.
Estimated at 1,200 deaths.
(Hurricane Katrina).

12/21/05 - The National Hurricane Center has announced that Hurricane Katrina was a strong
category 3 hurricane when it made landfall. They are downgrading Katrina to a category 3
hurricane.

12/30/05 -Tropical Storm Zeta develops which is now the 27th storm of the 2005 year.  Zeta
has set another record for the 2005 season.  Zeta surpassed 1954 Alice #2 as the longest lived
tropical system to form in December and cross over until the next year. Also, Zeta was the
longest lived January tropical cyclone (Jan 1st - 6th).   Zeta also resulted in the 2005 season
having the largest accumulated cyclone energy or ACE surpassing the 1950 hurricane season.

01/24/06 - The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Tropical Storm Cindy to a Hurricane
now making the total number of hurricanes to
15.  Post-storm reanalysis indicated that Cindy
was a category 1 hurricane just offshore before making landfall across southeastern Louisana
and the coastal areas of Mississippi and Alabama.

03/10/06 - After analysis, the National Hurricane Center is now confirming that Hurricane
Emily
was briefly a category 5 Hurricane
